A PSA 7 copy of Jordan's 1986 Fleer rookie sold at 0.96x the median for its own grade.

A 1986 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan rookie graded PSA 7 sold for $11,100 on eBay on Tuesday after 30 bids — and it was not the day’s biggest Jordan card sale.

Why it matters

The #57 is the Jordan rookie, and PSA 7 is the grade a lot of collectors actually hold. A sale there says more about the working market than the day’s top line does — that was a PSA 10 1995-96 Skybox E-XL Natural Born Thrillers insert at $19,099 on 43 bids.

By the numbers

  • $11,516.50 — the median of 14 other PSA 7 copies of the same card, unsigned, unaltered and with this sale excluded. Tuesday’s rookie cleared 0.96x that.
  • $10,300 to $20,000 — the full range of those 14 sales. Same card, same grade, 1.94x from cheapest to dearest.
  • 74 bids — the day’s most contested Jordan card, and it sold for $433. Heat and price are not the same signal.

Zoom in

A BGS 8.5 copy of the same rookie also changed hands Tuesday, at $15,999.99 — a fixed-price listing with 0 bids. Two mechanisms, two qualities of signal: one price discovered in the open, one agreed between two parties. Graders are not interchangeable either, so this column does not price a BGS number against a PSA one. Our October 25 edition led on the same card at a higher grade.

Reality check

The broad comparable pool for 1986 Fleer Jordans ran $6,200 at the 25th percentile to $17,300 at the 75th on a $10,350 median across 108 sales — 2.79x between its quartiles, past the 2.5x limit this column will quote. That is not one card’s market, it is several averaged together, and restricting the pool to PSA 7 copies is what made the median above usable. Valuing off the wrong peer group looks every bit as rigorous while being just as wrong, which is the same discipline behind source-linked research on the stock side.

How we track this

RazMania monitors completed eBay sales daily, filtering out multi-card lots, reprints and cross-listed items to isolate genuine single-card sales. Prices are final sold prices. The $11,516.50 figure is the median of 14 verified PSA 7 sales of the same card, unsigned and unaltered, with this sale excluded; the broader 1986 Fleer pool was too widely spread to quote and is reported above rather than used. Across the full day we tracked 215 confirmed paid Jordan sales at a $550.00 median. eBay reports sold date, not sold time.
