A 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan sticker #8 in a PSA 8 holder sold Wednesday for $5,284.99 on a single bid. An ungraded copy of the same sticker sold the same day for $1,302.70, after 11 bidders competed for it.

Why it matters

The slab set the gap, not the card. Both are the same sticker from the same 1986-87 Fleer set, and the only difference a buyer could see was the PSA 8 holder around one of them. If you are sitting on a raw copy, Wednesday priced the grading decision in public.

The bid counts tell opposite stories. The PSA 8 drew one bid, meaning it cleared at or near its opening price with nobody contesting it. The raw copy drew 11 — and all that competition still left it far behind the graded card. The cheaper sticker had the heavier price discovery.

Reality check

Two things Wednesday’s numbers do not say. The seller’s title calls the PSA 8 a “Rookie Card”: it is the 1986-87 Fleer sticker, not the #57 base card the hobby treats as the Jordan rookie. And the day’s largest figure, $7,000, came from one listing holding two cards — the sticker and a #57 together — sold on an accepted best offer, where eBay publishes the asking price rather than what the buyer paid. We are not counting it as a card sale.
