Altered Jordan rookie sold for $7,000 Saturday

Beckett authenticated the 1986-87 Fleer #57 but flagged it as altered, so it carries no numeric grade — and a buyer paid $7,000 anyway.

A 1986-87 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan rookie that Beckett slabbed as “Authentic Altered” — genuine, but physically modified, and therefore given no numeric grade — sold for $7,000 on eBay Saturday. It was the most notable Michael Jordan single-card sale we tracked that day, though not the largest number.

Why it matters

An altered stamp is supposed to be the end of the line. A slab that says a card has been trimmed, recolored or otherwise worked on normally pushes it out of the graded market and into the discount bin. A $7,000 result says the hobby’s benchmark Jordan rookie still has a bid under it even after that label.

By the numbers

The biggest figure attached to Saturday was $17,995, on a 1985 Star Crunch ‘n Munch #4 carrying a BGS 8.5 card grade. That one was also an accepted best offer, so the number is an asking price and not a confirmed sale price. A 1984 Star #195 cleared $9,999 on a single bid.

Reality check

This is one sale, not a trend — read it as a data point on how deep the Jordan rookie market runs, not as a new price level for altered cards. We also could not build a defensible comparable-sales baseline for it: the 30 matching 1986 Fleer #57 sales in our 90-day pool ran from $6.99 to $20,000, with a $1,000 first quartile against a $7,295 third quartile. That spread is several different cards averaged together, so no multiple is quoted here. Back-to-back pulls of Saturday’s sold feed also disagreed with each other, which is why this is the top sale we tracked rather than a certified daily high. For comparison, Friday’s report led on a $22,000 asking price.
