A 1986 Fleer #57 drew 68 bids and closed at $40,250 — 0.80x the $50,209.56 median for PSA 9 copies of the same card.

A 1986 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan graded PSA 9 drew 68 bids on eBay and closed at $40,250 on Thursday. A second PSA 9 copy of the same card sold the same day at $49,000 — as a buy-it-now, with no bidding at all.

Why it matters

The $49,000 copy was the day’s highest confirmed price and never faced a bidder. The $40,250 copy is the one an open market actually priced, and it finished under the median for its own grade. If you are holding a graded Jordan rookie, the distance between those two figures is the useful part — not either figure on its own.

By the numbers

  • $40,250 — where 68 bidders landed on a PSA 9 1986 Fleer #57.
  • $50,209.56 — the median across 9 same-grade PSA 9 sales of that card in our comparable pool. The lead sale came in at 0.80x it.
  • 68 bids — one short of the day’s most-contested card, a $400 1989 Hoops #200 PSA 10 that pulled 69.

Zoom in

Five copies of the #57 cleared in the same session, and the steps between condition tiers are nowhere near even:

  • PSA 9 — $49,000 as a buy-it-now, $40,250 at auction.
  • BGS 8 — $13,000, but on an accepted best offer, so eBay is publishing the seller’s ask and not what was paid.
  • Ungraded and PSA 7 — $10,001 on 44 bids, $8,864.11 on 36.

Two mechanisms, two different qualities of signal: a negotiated block on one side, open price discovery on the other. Reading the completed trade rather than the quote is the equities version of this discipline.

Reality check

The lead listing’s own title discloses a cracked slab. We are not telling you that is what moved the price — this is one sale, not a trend, and nothing in the data attributes a cause. The comparable pool is the larger caveat. Our broad 1986 Fleer pull ran from $65 to $114,999 across 109 sales, which is not one card’s market, so we threw it out and priced the lead against the 9 same-grade sales instead. Wednesday’s report hit the same wall.

How we track this

RazMania monitors completed eBay sales daily, filtering out multi-card lots, reprints and cross-listed items to isolate genuine single-card sales. Prices are final sold prices. This edition’s comparable baseline is 9 same-grade sales of the same card; the broader 1986 Fleer pool was rejected as too dispersed to quote, and no day-level totals are published for this session. Our trailing context window for this run spans 8 days, not 90. eBay reports sold date, not sold time.
