A PSA 7 copy of the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie, card #57, sold on eBay for $13,269 on Aug. 7 after 30 bids. The 90-day median for the same card in the same grade is $12,993.

Why it matters

The gap between what this buyer paid and what the card is worth is $276 — about 2%. On a five-figure purchase that is close enough to a coin flip that neither side of the argument gets to be loud about it.

The intrigue

The genius case is that this is the most efficiently priced card we have scored. Thirteen comps spanning $10,199 to $13,400 — the entire 90-day range is 1.31x, which for a five-figure card is remarkably orderly. Thirty bidders then converged on a number two percent off the median. Nobody got emotional, nobody got a bargain, and the market proved it knows exactly what this slab is worth.

Reality check

The idiot case is that the buyer paid the very top of the band. The 75th percentile sits at $13,206, and this sale cleared it. Patience was worth real money here: the same card in the same grade traded at $10,199 inside the same window, roughly $3,000 less. And the tape is flat, with the 30-day median only 1.6% above the 90-day figure across 7 sales, so there was no urgency to chase.
