Why it matters

The signing did not start this. James announced on July 24 that he had signed a 2-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers after leaving the Lakers, his fourth franchise and a record-extending 24th season. But the climb was already ten weeks old by then. The PSA 9 Topps Chrome #111 median ran $2,988 in the week of May 11 and $6,374 in the week of July 20, before the announcement. What trailing comps miss here is not one news event. It is a slow repricing that began in spring and peaked the week the news landed.

The same card in PSA 10 moved just 17%, $13,888 to $16,300. Buyers chasing a news cycle reach for the copy they can afford, and PSA 10 money was already committed.
