LeBron’s PSA 9 rookie rose 88% before the news

The card cleared $6,000 on July 18. James announced the 76ers on July 24.

A 2003-04 Topps Chrome LeBron James rookie in PSA 9 now carries a $6,000 median, up 87.5% from $3,200 over the prior 60 days. It is the largest move on RazMania’s 51-card watchlist — and it was finished before the news broke.

Why it matters

Free agency did the work, not the announcement. If you were holding one and waiting for James to pick a team before listing it, the market had already repriced the card without you. The rumor moves it and the confirmation does not — worth knowing before the next one.

The confirmed sales tell it cleanly. Base #111 copies traded between $3,299 and $4,500 from June 20 through July 5. One cleared $5,000 on July 8, $5,500 on July 14, and $6,000 on July 18. James announced Philadelphia on July 24 — by which point copies were already changing hands at $6,250. Since August 1, sales have run $5,500 to $6,400, with no further gain.

Reality check

Two cautions. We cannot explain the Brady move: his only July news is a reported WWE storyline, which is not a reason a five-figure rookie reprices, and confirmed sales of that card span $5,600 to $15,000 inside the same PSA 9 grade — a shift in which copies sold could produce this with no market move at all. Separately, only 13 of 51 watchlist cards produced a read we would stand behind this cycle. The rest were too thin, or their sales pools too mixed, to quote a median honestly.

What's next

The watchlist is re-measured weekly. On LeBron the question is whether $6,000 holds now the catalyst has passed — early August is flat to slightly soft. Any card that repeats next week gets flagged as a second straight appearance.

Medians use confirmed eBay sold prices only — best-offer-accepted listings are excluded, because eBay publishes the seller’s asking price on those and not what was actually paid; 1406 such rows were removed this cycle. A card is only called a mover with at least 5 sales in the trailing 30 days, 8 in the 60 days before that, and a move of 15.0% or more. Cards whose sales spread wider than 3.0x from the 25th to the 75th percentile are dropped as contaminated pools rather than reported. 13 of 51 cards produced a valid two-window read.
