A 1985-86 Star Michael Jordan #6 in a BGS 9.5 slab sold Monday for $29,123 after 60 bids. It was both the largest Jordan figure of the day and its top confirmed paid sale.

Why it matters

Mid-80s Star Co. cardboard carried the day, not the 1986-87 Fleer rookie that usually does. Four of the five sales our scorer ranked most notable were Star Co. Jordans. The lone Fleer #57 among them, a PSA 7, went for $12,625 on 29 bids.

Two BGS 9.5 Star Jordans cleared on the same day by opposite mechanisms. The #6 ran as an open auction and took 60 bids to get to $29,123. The #117 sat as a fixed-price listing and moved at $28,000 having drawn none. A negotiated sale tells you what one buyer would pay; an auction tells you what the next-best buyer would have paid too. That gap between a private block and open price discovery is the same one we read on the equities version of this discipline. A third Star Co. Jordan, a BGS 8 All-Rookie Team #2, drew 40 bids and finished at $11,299.99.

Reality check

We pulled 42 comparable Star Jordan sales to price the lead card and threw the pool out. It ran from $4.95 to $15,100 — not one card’s market but several products averaged together, and any multiple built on it would look rigorous while being wrong. No multiple is quoted here. Separately, 84 of the day’s 384 listings were accepted best offers carrying $125,950.19 in asking prices; eBay never publishes what those settled at, so none are inside the paid figures above. The largest was a 1986-87 Fleer #57 in PSA 8 listed at $20,000.
