$14,900: Genius or Idiot?

A 26-bid auction settled 14% above the matched-comp median. That gap is the whole argument.

A PSA 10 copy of the 2025 One Piece OP11-A Fist of Divine Speed Monkey D. Luffy #119, 3rd Anniversary silver, sold on eBay for $14,900 on Aug. 5 after 26 bids. The matched-comp median for the same card in the same grade is $13,100.

Why it matters

This is the rare five-figure sale you can actually check. Most cards at this price have almost no comparable sales, so nobody can say whether the buyer got a deal. This one has 23 verified PSA 10 sales behind it in 90 days.

By the numbers

• $13,100 — median of 23 PSA 10 sales of the same card, trailing 90 days.
• 1.14x — what the buyer paid against it, a premium of $1,800.
• $10,000 to $17,000 — the 25th-to-75th percentile band. The sale lands inside it, near the top.

The intrigue

The genius case rests on the bidding, not the price. 26 bids means a room set this number, not one buyer staring at a Buy It Now. The buyer also stepped in while the card was firming — the 30-day median sits 5.3% above the 90-day figure — and the same pool has already printed $23,500, so there is tested headroom above $14,900.

Reality check

The idiot case is simpler. You paid $1,800 over the median for a card with 23 comps. That is a liquid asset, not a scarce one, and liquid assets do not require a premium. The pool runs down to $4,700, and a patient bid at the 25th percentile of $10,000 owns the identical slab. It is also a 2025 card with no population report available to us, so nobody knows how many more PSA 10s sit in the grading queue.

We skipped all of them — the Rayquaza returned 1 comparable sale in 90 days, and most of the rest returned 1 or 2. You cannot tell a buyer they overpaid when there is nothing to measure against. This column argues about the biggest number it can defend, not the biggest one it can find.
